Lazare Wormser / Elise Klein

I apologize, but I do not speak French and I hope that this question in English from somebody in the United States is allowed.

I am looking for some help locating information about my 3rd great-grandparents, Lazare Wormser (b. 1810) and Elise Klein (b. 1820), both from Alsace.

I found some census records in Bischheim that show they lived there with their family prior to moving to the United States:

https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/REC-POP-C43-R673#visio/page...
https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/REC-POP-C43-R674#visio/page...
https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/REC-POP-C43-R675#visio/page...

First, since my family and I will be traveling to France and Strasbourg this summer, I was hoping to find out what the current streets are that correspond to the names in the census.

Second, I am looking for information about Lazare and Elise and where they were originally from; I could not find them in the Bischheim census records before 1856. I know that Lazare died in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA on 17 April 1891.

Any help is appreciated!

Lazare Wormser / Elise Klein

Hello,

Here are some of the first things I found:

1. based on the Bischheim censuses you give:
- in 1856 they lived on rue des Abeilles
- in 1861 they lived on route Impériale or Rue de l'Enfer?
- in 1866 they lived on Rue Principale
The best solution is to go, during your visit to Alsace this summer, directly to the town hall of Bischheim which can certainly tell you more about these streets in the 19th century and what they have become today … a priori a «rue des Abeilles» still exists (see Google Maps).

2. Lazare WORMSER / Elise KLEIN

- Lazare (Lazarus) WORMSER was born on 13 August 1818 in Bischheim. His parents were Benjamin WORMSER (died in Bischheim on 3 May 1837) and Jeannette FLEISCHMANN.
see his birth certificate n°50: https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/ETAT-CIVIL-C43-P1-R12354#vi...

- Elise (or Adèle or Amalie) KLEIN was born in November 1823 in Remagen (Prussia – now Rhineland-Palatinate/Germany). Her parents were Nathan KLEIN (died in Bischheim on 25 May 1842) and Caroline FASBENDER (whom you find at the home of Lazare WORMSER during the 1856 census, named FARBENDER, and died in Bischheim on 20 January 1858).

They married on 11 February 1847 in Bischheim. See their marriage certificate n°2: https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/ETAT-CIVIL-C43-P1-R12609#vi...

I hope this will help you in your research.

PS: by continuing the research we should be able to go back a little further in time

Merci

Thank you for that information! How did you find the death dates of Carline Farbender and Nathan Klein? I was able to see that Lazare and Elise/Adèle/Amalie were still living in Bischheim in 1880 (https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/REC-POP-C43-R676#visio/page...) and I know that Lazare made it to the US with Jacob but I don't know what happened to Elise. Also interesting is that Lazare and Jacob claimed on the US census that they had been US residents since 1870!

The mayor of Bischheim has reached out to me, and I hope that we're able to meet up and I can see what the streets were like in the 19th century.

The date of death of Nathan

The date of death of Nathan KLEIN is mentioned in the marriage certificate of Elise KLEIN.
- death certificate: https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/ETAT-CIVIL-C43-P1-R12715#vi...

For Caroline FASBENDER , I first searched the decennial tables of the civil status of Bischheim to find the death of a Caroline FASBENDER and her date and then I checked in the acts themselves to make sure it was her.
- image of the relevant 10-year table: https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/ETAT-CIVIL-C43-P1-R12322#vi...
- death certificate: https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/ETAT-CIVIL-C43-P1-R12731#vi...

I practiced the same for Adèle KLEIN. Her death on April 9, 1881 in Bischheim is declared by Jakob (Jacques) WORMSER.
- image of the relevant 10-year table: https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/ETAT-CIVIL-C43-P1-R12325#vi...
- death certificate: https://archives.bas-rhin.fr/detail-document/ETAT-CIVIL-C43-P1-R12754#vi...

Fortunately these deaths are in Bischheim, otherwise the search would be much more difficult and random.

Nathan KLEIN & Caroline FASSBAENDER

Nathan KLEIN (ex-HIRTZEL) was born in Schirrhoffen in 1782.
Caroline FASSBAENDER was born a little earlier in Remagen.
They married probably in Remagen where their first child (Marie-Anne) was born on 15 September 1810.
