Relatives in France, circa 1921

Shabbat Shalom! I’m sorry, I cannot speak French. My great great grandmother and 3 of her brothers immigrated to New York City from Kalisz, Poland in the early 1900s. One of the brothers received a passport in 1921, and said he would be traveling to France to visit a sister. He was Hirsz Markowski, but later changed his name to Harry Markel. The sister would have been Markowska, before she married. I don’t know her married name, or anything about her. It is possible her first name is Sala, but maybe not. I was told the sisters who stayed in Europe married orthodox or Hasidic men. How can I discover this sister?

Any help is appreciated,

Dear Corey,

Try first https://gallica.bnf.fr/accueil/en/content/accueil-en?mode=desktop that might have some references for the names you mentioned

2nd step would be more complicated, as you would need to search in the "Fond de Moscou" in the French National Archives

I did it quickly and found 2 references

Markowska Dora - (that sounds like your "Sala")
Markowska Catherine
(and tons of Markowski as well but no Hirsch -- but I did not had a very close look)

reference of the files : 19940462/133

All is closed those days in France -- no way to get access to those files (you need to be physically at a specific place)

Hope that helps,
Best regards
