FAMILIES

The first Arons of Phalsbourg (Alsace). Part 2 : Back to Phalsbourg (1724).

Pierre-André Meyer

The Aron finally succeed in returning to Phalsbourg in 1724 after having found a refuge in Lixheim following their expulsion in 1712. They are probably granted permission to do so after agreeing to live in three houses only, located in the same area. The family history can be traced through notary deeds and the corresponding IOUs and receipts. Aron, « the father », died in 1742 or 1743 and a third generation takes over. Pierre-André Meyer follows up their story until the French Revolution when all restrictions to the settlement of Jews in cities are waived. As early as 1808, 42 households with 240 individuals live in Phalsbourg.
